Is it possible to carry a radio shack everywhere? It’s going to be tough but Amateur Radio provides us the bliss to communicate with people all over the globe with or without the use of GSM Network. But we all carry smartphones with us so this time by utilizing the GSM network we can actually communicate with people all over the world. Isn't it fun? There's this an application on Play Store named 'Echolink'. It is an initiative of the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL). Only seasoned (having valid license) hams can access Echolink. If any individual will not possess license they cannot access the Echolink. Any licensed ham can access it from anywhere on any device such as mobile, PC, laptop and now even on tablet.
Firstly, you need to download this application. Next, you have to verify your license. It may take 1-2 days’ time but now it gets done even within 5-6 hours. Then you can change the settings as per your taste. There are a lot options to explore like Audio test server, Conferences, Repeaters, Links and location where you can view the number of Echolink nodes worldwide and users available on Echolink. You can also check your previous net checking’s in “Recent QSOs” which will show all the recent contacts you made. You will get “Call CQ” option where you can give call to any other station who wants to contact.
A chat box is also provided in the software for users to share any piece of information according to their liking. At the beginning it will seem tough but after using it regularly it will be a piece of cake. It is such an application which will help indulging into the hobby better. The repeaters are linked with VHF (Very High Frequency) mode of communication so you can also listen to hams on frequency.
Each net is different from one another. Some run on a daily basis, some run weekly once. The time schedule is also different for nets. You can even speak to individual hams through the "User" option. If you are insecure about your pronunciation or modulation you can test your voice by their audio test server under the name "ECHOTEST" which is absolutely safe and no one can hear it except you. Still having second thoughts? Don't worry trying something new is fun. Get licensed, grab your phone, download the app, make your voice known to thousands!
