Kolkata, June 4 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated Lee Jae-myung on his election as the new President of South Korea. Taking to X, PM Modi said, "Congratulations to Mr. Lee Jae-myung on being elected as the President of the Republic of Korea (ROK). Look forward to working together to further expand and strengthen the India-ROK Special Strategic Partnership."
Lee’s victory follows a turbulent period in South Korea’s politics, sparked by former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s brief but shocking imposition of martial law. With nearly 95% of votes counted, Lee secured 48.86%, defeating conservative rival Kim Moon Soo.
A seasoned liberal from the Democratic Party, Lee has promised to rebuild trust, revive the economy, and promote peace with North Korea, while reaffirming South Korea’s alliance with the U.S. and its ties with Japan. He is known for his rags-to-riches journey, having risen from child labourer to a prominent political figure.
Lee assumes office immediately for a five-year term, with no transition period — taking charge at a time of economic strain and diplomatic challenges, including U.S. trade pressures and North Korea’s growing nuclear threat.India and South Korea, long-standing partners, are expected to deepen cooperation under Lee’s leadership.
